We were out fairly early as we wanted to catch high tide at Blue Holes, a swimming and snorkelling area just south of the town. When we got there, we changed our minds. Due to strong SW winds over the past day or two, the sea was really whipped up and breaking over the fringing reef and into the pools. It was a bit of a disappointment, but you can't do much about the weather! We did see an Osprey hovering above the sea though and I even managed to catch it on my small camera.
We came back to the house and got changed out of swimming costumes and then went back out to Rainbow Jungle a parrot sanctuary where they breed parrots especially endangered ones. It was A$16 each, but the project isn't funded so it is only through admission fees, donations and volunteers that they keep going. As well as birds breeding in cages, they have a huge walk-in aviary where the parrots and some finches were free-flying in amongst the trees and bushes. We spent quite a long time sitting watching them flit around. It's amazing how well a brightly coloured parrot can successfully hide in a bush, but they do!
We were rather hot and thirsty when we left and it was lunchtime. Good excuse to go to Angies Cafe again to have a sandwich.
Back at the house, we decided to use the pool, but noticed that thunder clouds were building up inland of us. The pool was lovely and the sun stayed with us despite us listening to thunder roll around not that many miles away.
We have decided that we will head directly to Freemantle tomorrow, it will be a long drive but then we have three nights in one hotel in Freemantle. We therefore did a bit of planning and arranged with the hotel to add a night to our stay there.
We thought we'd try some early evening birdspotting, this was spoilt by the fact that it was spitting with rain. We did see a few Port Lincoln Ringnecks, they were very pretty. At this stage it was dinner time so we stopped to buy fish and chips. The owner, who was clearly very hot and hassled appeared and said he was shutting because the power had gone off! We headed down the road and stopped at the Pelican Cafe and I went to talk to the owner as we'd realised that the power seemed to be off in other places. Sure enough, he'd lost his power too, we stood and talked for a few minutes and he was fairly disparaging about the pub and Tavern up the road, both of whom had generators so were unaffected by the lack of power.
We wished him well as the staff were putting the chairs away and were about to drive off when the owner, in chefs whites, came running across the road to us to tell us the power was back! We reparked the car and followed him back inside and as a result ended up with a delicious meal that we ate looking out over the Murchison River.
An interesting day, but not one we planned!
